Early autograph corrected manuscripts for 'Arabian Sands' by Wilfred P. Thesiger
File
1956-1957
1 box containing 13 envelopes
The box contains multiple versions of Thesiger’s corrected manuscripts for chapters 1-14 of ‘Arabian Sands’ by Wilfred P. Thesiger.
The first and early versions are characterised by Thesiger’s corrections in blue ink and red ball-point pen, often containing large paragraphs which have been crossed out. The secondary versions can be identified by the addition of proper names being rewritten in red ball-point pen to aid the typist who had reported that they were unable to read his handwriting. Not all the versions are complete copies of the chapters and Thesiger would often rewrite sample extracts.
Thesiger would write and correct a chapter or section at a time and therefore he kept all the early drafts of the individual chapters together. Some of the typescript drafts with different corrections have also been filed amongst the manuscripts. Alongside the chapters are detailed autograph notes, which are not draft chapters, but more of an aide memoire while he forming his ideas and recalling the journeys he took.
The chapter numbers of these early manuscripts reflects the order in which he wrote them, rather than the order in which they appeared in the book. The final text had 17 chapters; however the early manuscripts of the remaining chapters were not given to the archive along with the rest of the papers.

The multiple versions of the manuscripts were organised by chapter and have been placed in individual envelopes to reflect this original arrangement.
