Maj. Christopher Stone DSO MC (1882-1954), youngest child of Edward Daniel Stone and Elizabeth Theresa Vidal Stone. Christopher served in World War I, edited The Gramaphone, and had a career as a broadcaster. He married Alyce Emily Wilson Chinery in 1908.

Content description

Letters, manuscripts, printed material and photographs relating to the life of Christopher Stone. Correspondence consists of 174 ALS, dated from 1890 to 1940, written by Christopher to family members, some of them written from the front during World War I, and a group of 64 ALS to Christopher from his wife Alyce, dating from 1918-1919.
There are also photocopies of four letters from Christopher Stone, three to his father and one to Ruth Boswell Stone. Writings include notebooks with autograph manuscript poems and notes on classical subjects, a copy of The Eton Glossary with a notebook with revisions for the fifth edition published in 1923, with related letters from J. W. Carter, Arthur Ainger, C. R. L. Fletcher, H. E. Luxmoore, and E. L. Vaughan; notebook with draft of Garibaldi (an entry for the Newdigate Prize in 1904), and later typescript, and a diary for 1944. Documents include Christopher's DSO certificate, dated 1918 and two official Mentioned in Despatches certificates from 1917-1918. Printed material consists of A Study of Sir Henry Irving by Aubrey Beardsley given to "Aunt Alice and Christopher, with love from John [Carter]." There are two photo albums, one of them a scrapbook from his service in World War I, with photographs of regiments, documents, letters, printed ephemera and drawings by Richard T. Cooper. The other photo album documents Christopher's life up to the First World War.
