This sub-series contains the photocopies of Grizel Hartley’s letters, made by P.S.H. Lawrence in preparation for ‘Grizel: Grizel Hartley remembered’ (1991). The letters were gathered from her various correspondents, copied, and returned to their owners. The collection consists of all the letters Lawrence gathered and includes a significant number of letters omitted from the final anthology.

Grizel Hartley never put the year at the top of her letters and so where the year could not be identified through the subject matter or the postmark, the date is conjecture on the part of Lawrence.

The original letters date from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The photocopied pages are grouped according to the correspondent. The order of these files maintains the original order imposed by Lawrence during his work editing Hartley’s letters.

The corresponding number assigned by Lawrence in his log of the letters (see MS 699 01 04) has been noted within this catalogue.
