Josef Herman OBE RA, was a highly regarded Polish-British realist painter who exhibited with Merchant on several occasions. Merchant first met Herman during a radio broadcast for Welsh Home Service on 20 January 1961. They formed what Merchant would call the ‘closest possible friendship
