David Bell was an artist and the Curator of Swansea Art Galleries, the Director of the Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea and the Art Director of the Welsh Committee of the Arts Council. The Western Mail commissioned ten biographies of young Welsh clergymen with accompanying drawings by Bell. Merchant was the subject of one essay and wrote the other nine biographies.

Content description
The letters concern various works of art. Also included in the file are letters concerning a ‘David Bell Memorial Exhibition’ held at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, to which Merchant lent a painting. Also included in the file is a copy of ‘The Catalogue of the David Bell Memorial Exhibition’, held in 1961
