Administrative / Biographical history
Elizabeth Barrett Moulton was the daughter of Edward Barrett (1734-1798) and Judith Goodin (1741-1804). Her siblings were George Goodin, Henry, Samuel and Sarah Goodin Barrett. Born at Cinnamon Hill, Jamaica, the estate of her father, she married Charles Moulton in 1781 with whom she had four children: Edward (1785-1857), Samuel (1787-1837) George (1789-1793) and Sarah (Pinkie) (1783-1795). She separated from Charles Moulton and moved from Jamaica to England with her close friend Maria Trepsack (Trippy) from about 1793 to see to her children’s education. She lived in Surrey c.1809 and in Marylebone in London, close to other members of her family. She died at Baker Street, London in 1830. As all three of her brothers predeceased her father Edward, he left his Jamaica estates to Elizabeth’s sons Edward and Samuel on condition they take on the additional surname of Barrett.

Arrangement
These papers originally formed part of an amalgamated chronological series described as ‘The Jamaica papers’, arranged for the process of publication in the 1960s. In 2025 they were substantially re-arranged and re-catalogued in order to respect archival provenance, original order, context and improve clarity and access for researchers. In this process, Elizabeth Moulton’s papers have been separated from the Jamaica papers to form their own series.
