1774-1927

Extent & medium

3 boxes

Content description

A collection of papers relating to the Moulton Barretts' Jamaican plantations. The papers consist of legal and financial documents, accounts, contracts, handwritten lists of the slaves on each plantation and related material. Edward Barrett (1734-1798) was the original landowner of four Jamaican plantations: Cinnamon Hill, Cambridge, Oxford and Cornwall. The chronological order of these papers provides a useful tool for tracking the fortunes of the plantations and their owners, from Edward Barrett through to his descendants who eventually lost the estates.

Provenance

In boxes labelled "Q1 1774-1841", "Q2 1841-1875" and "Q3 1875-1927, N.D." by Edward R. Moulton-Barrett. The documents are in smaller folders within the boxes.

Arrangement

The papers relating to the Jamaican estates were arranged chronologically by Edward R. Moulton Barrett. This order has been retained. Each document is catalogued individually in the card catalogue that accompanies this archive.

The three boxes have been catalogued to file level as the papers in each box do vary:
