Administrative / Biographical history

Samuel Moulton-Barrett, known as Sam, was born at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1812. He was the fifth child of Edward Moulton-Barrett and Mary Graham-Clarke. Educated at Charterhouse from 1822 to 1828, Sam was sent to Jamaica in 1836 to gain experience managing the family’s estates with his uncle Samuel. Sam behaved unacceptably, was criticised for his management of the Jamaica estates and was sent home several times. He also entered into his uncle Sam’s quarrel with the missionary Rev Hope Waddell, who worked to improve the welfare and working conditions for the enslaved persons on the estates. Sam’s younger brother Charles John (Storm) was sent to assist him with the estates in 1839 or 1840. Sam managed the Cinnamon Hill estates and Storm took over at Cambridge. Sam was active in Jamaican public affairs and became a magistrate. He reconciled with Hope Waddell, who was with him before his death at Cinnamon Hill from tropical fever in February 1840.
