Administrative / Biographical history

George Moulton-Barrett (1816-1895), known as Georgie, was the eighth child of Edward and Mary Moulton-Barrett, born at Hope End in July 1816. He graduated from Glasgow University in 1835 and was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1838. He practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit until a hearing impairment led to his retirement in 1860.

George became a trusted confidant of his sister Elizabeth after he accepted her marriage to Robert Browning. Following their father’s death in 1857, he was joint executor of the estate with his brother Charles John, with particular responsibility for the settlement of his father’s properties.

He kept rooms at 2 Tanfield Court, Temple in London until 1860 before moving to Warnicombe House near Tiverton, Devon. George travelled widely and later settled in Tenby, where he died in August 1895.
