Hardy married Florence Dugdale on 10 February 1914. Florence took over the running of Max Gate with the support of Hardy's sisters. As part of that, Florence handled the ever-increasing amounts of Max Gate correspondence, often typing up and signing letters that Hardy had drafted in pencil.
