The composer Martin Shaw founded the Purcell Operatic Society in 1899. He soon recruited his close friend Edward Gordon Craig as the stage director and production designer. Their first production in 1900 was of Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas.

This sub-series contains various papers and ephemera relating to the society and Edward Gordon Craig’s involvement, as well as material belonging to Martin Shaw that was subsequently passed to Gordon Craig. The papers relate to the society in general, rather than specific productions, with the exception of ‘Dido and Aeneas’.
