In later life, Edward Gordon Craig, increasingly saw himself as Robinson Crusoe and in 1924 he began creating woodblocks to illustrate an edition of the work. The idea was never realised in his lifetime, however, in 1979 Edward A. Craig compiled the engravings worked on by his father and together with The Basilisk Press, finally published the work, with E.A. Craig also providing an introduction.

Content description

This sub-series contains Edward A. Craig’s papers relating to the publication of his father’s intended project, including, notes, galley proofs, and copies of Gordon Craig’s original artwork.

It also contains correspondence between E.A. Craig and the publishers and publicity material relating to the final publication as well as printed copies of the edition.

The papers are arranged in chronological order.

Eton College also holds a collection of woodcuts for Robinson Crusoe, which were acquired separately. These are catalogued under ‘Miscellaneously acquired material’
