E.A. Craig collection: Papers relating to Edward Gordon Craig’s design for the Cranach edition of ‘Hamlet’
Sub-sub-series
Count Harry Kessler first proposed the idea for a special edition of ‘Hamlet’ in 1912. The play would be translated into German and illustrated using Craig’s ‘Black figure’ prints. The result was the publication in German in 1928 and in English in 1930 by Cranach Press, Kessler’s printing company.
Craig, who saw himself as character Hamlet, threw himself into the project, which was bold and revolutionary.
