Content description
A collection of textile materials:
1. Thomas Hardy's waistcoat, c.1890s. Purported to be knitted by Jemima Hardy, his mother, by previous owner Celia Barclay but the waistcoat appears to be machine-made
2. One piece of embroidery executed by Hardy's grandmother on the paternal side. It is the only piece of work by her know to be in existence. The needlework was given by Kate Hardy to James Sparks. It then passed in his will to Nat Sparks
3. A set of 12 handmade buttons from Dorset. Buttons of this kind were made by women in their own cottages as late as 1820.
