Content description

A collection of manuscript and typescript material related to Sassoon:

1: Typescripts for a number of BBC radio programmes about Siegfried Sassoon, accompanied by a letter to Sassoon from James McFarlan in the BBC drama department and an invitation for Sassoon to a reading of one of the programmes. Some contain original readings by Sassoon. The typescripts are for "Sassoon's Progress" ('Signature' programme), "A Tribute to Sir Max Beerbohm" by Sassoon, "Poetry Promenade: Siegfried Sassoon", "Siegfried Sassoon" (celebrating his 80th birthday) and "Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon: a selection from their poetry".
2: A typescript copy of James Kirkup's poem "The Last Man", published in "The Submerged Village & Other Poems". This copy was sent to Sassoon by Kirkup in 1951, who requests in the accompanying autograph letter that the poem may be dedicated to Sassoon. 12 leaves, with "The Last Man, to Siegfried Sassoon" on first page.
3: A copy of James Swetham's "The Soul's Departure", copied out by John Sparrow for Sassoon. On All Soul's College, Oxford, stationery.
4: Anonymous typescript entitled "Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man". It is an article about Sassoon's book of that name, published in 1928.

Provenance

"The Last Man" typescript by James Kirkup was sent to Siegfried Sassoon with an autograph letter in 1951 (the letter is also in this collection) and the copy by John Sparrow of the poem "The Soul's Departure" was also copied out for Sassoon.
