This sub-series covers the creation and development of the work from the early manuscripts and typescripts through to the first proof and the final press proof. It also includes related material, which includes press reaction to the work

The manuscripts and typescripts show the development of the poems with the drafts differing from earlier versions to varying degrees. The changes vary from the alteration the word order to complete rewrites of particular stanzas. A number of the early drafts were also written under different titles from the final published version.

The files contain drafts of 23 of the 26 poems which appeared in the final work. The poems not represented included:

'Holidays': This was unrevised from when it was previously published in ‘Some Sweet Days’ [see MS 924 03 26 for manuscripts and typescripts]
'Low Tide': This had was previously published in ‘Some Sweet Days’ [see MS 924 03 28 for manuscripts and typescripts]
'The Water Bearer': This was unrevised from when it was previously published in ‘Some Sweet Days’ [see MS 924 03 29 for manuscripts and typescripts]

Arrangement

This sub-series has been arranged by individual poem and according to the creative order of the work. This reflects the original order of the files at the time of acquisition.
