Elizabeth Hutchings (née Hedley) was born in Darlington on 27 August 1926. During the Second World War she joined the WAAFS where she was posted to the Isle of Wight. Together with her husband Richard Hutchings, she became a founding member of the Farringford Tennyson Society, with Richard the first President. They have also written and edited a number of books on Tennyson.
Hutchings published Norman-Butler’s memoir of her only brother, James who was killed defending the Dunkirk evacuation.
