Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870-1953). French-English writer, politician and historian, orator, poet, sailor, satirist, writer of letters, soldier, political activist and Catholic advocate. His mother was British and he was naturalised 1902. He was elected President of the Oxford Union. He was one of the first openly Catholic MPs, 1906-1910. He was a close friend of G K Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw. He was a close friend of Cecilia Fisher, whom he met through their mutual friend Maurice Baring. He wrote 150 books, essays, travel writing and poetry, and political non-fiction. He married Elodie Hogan in 1896 and they had five children; two of their sons were killed in the First and Second World Wars. He died in 1952.
