Series
Ethel (Ettie) Anne Priscilla Grenfell (née Fane), Lady Desborough (1867-1952) was a popular British society hostess. She married William Grenfell MP in 1877 – later Lord Desborough. From 1911 she was occasionally Lady of the Bedchamber to Mary of Teck, consort of King George V. Three of her sons predeceased her, one of whom was the war poet Julian Grenfell. Her circle included Edward VII (while Prince of Wales) and six Prime Ministers - Rosebery, Balfour, Asquith, Baldwin, Chamberlain and Churchill. She and her husband were leading members of the social and intellectual circle ‘The Souls’ – an influential group of aristocrats and others with political and literary interests, including Henry Irving, Vita Sackville-West, Patrick Shaw-Stewart, Edith Wharton and Oscar Wilde.
