Joseph Frederick Burrell (1909-1983) was the son of Amelia Mary Birt and Arthur Joseph Topham Burrell. He attended Eton College from 1922 to 1928. He married Diana Beechcroft in 1940 and served in the Royal Regiment of Artillery in World War 2. He was a solicitor at the College's legal advisors Farrer & Co. at Lincoln's Inn, London and was seconded to act on legal matters at Eton from 1964-1976. He was appointed Solicitor-General to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1972 and was made a Commander of Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1976. He was also interested in art, architecture, heraldry and bookplate collecting.
