By the late 1960s it was clear that staffing twenty-five separate boarding house dining rooms was becoming both impracticable and expensive. It was difficult to provide refreshments for visiting teams and there was no central provision for masters. Various ways of centralising catering were explored and eventually it was decided to build a central dining room. Designed by Powell and Moya and opened in 1974, it originally catered for 6 houses and masters, but an extension in 1980 increased the number to 11. The boys' side was subsequently opened to support staff.
