Administrative / Biographical history

From 1791 a local bookseller, Thomas Pote, began to produce printed lists of the school. These rapidly replaced the manuscript lists that had been produced previously. They were originally made at the end of the summer half only.

1791 -

Content description

The lists were produced annually at the end of the summer half until 1839 when they began to be produced for every half; in trying to establish an Oppidan's date of departure, therefore, all one can say is that he appears in the list for year x but not that for the following year, and could have left any time between the end of the summer in which he last appears and the start of the next summer half. The lists gradually increase the information provided, giving details of prizes won, number of times sent-up for good and so on. For most years we have multiple copies, some of them annotated with exact dates of departure or with the divisions for the next half. Occasionally speeches programmes will be pasted in. There are also sets of bound lists.
