Administrative / Biographical history
Eton fives is unique because of the architecture of the court rather than the basic idea of the game - using your hand to hit a ball against a wall. The boys did this in the space between the buttresses of College Chapel and found that the ridges and the intrusive buttress made for a distinctive game. It was so popular that in 1847 replica walls were built - the first fives courts. Eton fives is now played in many places outside Eton, both in this country and abroad.
