Administrative / Biographical history
"Football" at Eton used to mean only the Field Game, which is one of the main ancestors of soccer. Undergraduates at Cambridge who came from schools with different football games but wanted to be able to play a common game combined elements from all their traditions to create a new set of rules. These Cambridge rules formed the basis of the Association game. There was no separate Association team at Eton until 1930 but Old Etonian teams won the FA Cup in 1879 and 1882.
