College Chapel: Work under Provost Hodgson
Sub-series
In the 1840s a major restoration took place, mainly the work of James Deason who substituted gothic style for classical. The reredos was removed and the panelling stripped away. This uncovered the wall paintings but before their significance was realised, the upper layer was scraped away. They were then hidden behind gothic choir stalls, some of which still remain at the west end (the rest are now at Lancing College). Much of the work was financed by one of the Fellows, Rev. John Wilder, and the Bursar's correspondence with him and others involved (COLL/B1/1/20-24) is a fascinating insight into the project. The old woodwork was sold at auction at Datchet Railway Station and some, including the urns, has ended up at St Paul's Cathedral (see ED 202 for an account of this woodwork)
