Provost Goodall: Letter to William Goodall
Item
2 May 1830
1 itemn als, 2 bifolia
The man who stole the Leinster jewels was the Duchess's brother, F. Stanhope; he sold them to a Jew who took them to the Duke and claimed the reward; the thief has fled and the Duke will prosecute if he returns. Has been to the National Gallery and the Society of British Artists, which is inferior to former Suffolk Street exhibitions. His friend the Bishop of Worcester has an execution for debt against him. Shocking that Lord Carrington [?Harrington] attended a ball at Walmer Castle with a death in the family. Both the Bursars have been in town on College business which is not altogether of a pleasant nature. His old tutor Barnes has died aged 94. Not pleased with Dibdin's latest publication. Has received the petition to Parliament against the Fourth report of the Church Commissioners. Surprised to hear Lord Brougham has purchased an estate near Cannes. The Queen took the sacrament today which she unaccountably failed to do at Easter; it has been reported that this was because of the inattention of the Canons of Windsor but he attended St George's so that the altar might not be without a 'competent number'.
