Private business affairs; Jeffry Wyatville has relapsed. Three deaths from smallpox in the High Street. Appointment of new Governor of Greenwich 'universally dissatisfactory'. Received elegiac verses written by 'a Marquis in his 80th year' [Marquess Wellesley]. Coins and medal. Queen Dowager sent Lord Barrington to ask for a holiday for the boys; her health and that of the Duchess of Gloucester much improved. Has just appointed Mr Vowles in place of Mr [Thomas] Pope who will become a vicar [of Christchurch] and 'a Benedict'. [Francis Voules appointed conduct in 1837 (Foster)].
