He has not forbidden the matches. The Winchester authorities announced in 1855 that their boys were forbidden in future to play at Lord's. Anxious to maintain the salutary friendship of rivalry he proposed alternate matches at the respective schools, which was agreed to. Outlines problems he sees with London match; complaints were made of expense when he had pupils.
