Modbury, Devon: Letters of John, Abbot of the Monastery

Letters of John, Abbot of the Monastery of the Blessed Mary of St. Peter super Dyvam, Seez diocese, and of the Convent. Brother John Prentpain, priest and monk of the said monastery, who holds the office of pittancer is accustomed to receive each year three marks of silver from the Prior of Montebury. Brother jOhn Micaelis, the Prior, with the two monks living with him in the Priory havve besought the Abbot that they have not the wherewithal to maintain an honest livelihood. They are therefore granted the said three maerks by the unanimous decision of the Chapter. Given in the Chapter, 4 July 1376.
Two Seals. Pointed oval, green wax, pendant on doubled tags.
(1) Badly broken, 35.mm. originally about 55.mm. A figure seated full face with crozier in right hand, beneath a gothic canopy, between shields of arms, barry of six, embattled.
(2) Fragmentary, originally about 60.mm. A canopy.
