Indenture of lease, by Henry Savile, Provost, and the College, of Eton to Sir Richard Chambernowne, of Modbury, Knight, of the Priory, rectory and parsonage of Modbury, the manors of Modbury, Upton and Penquitt, a tenement in Notter, and eight closes(named) in Modbury, parcels of the manor of Upton, and a cottage sometime held by John Hele, of Fleete, and late by Michael Mallett, and a tenement or cottage with three closes(named) and a parcel of land called the Wood, sometime held by John Baker and William, his son, and the late by Michael Mallett; excepting the advowson of the vicarage of Modbury and all great timber. To hold, for the lives in survivorship of the Lady Elizabeth Campernowne, wife of Sir Richard, and Henry Champernowne and John Champernowne, sons of Sir Arthur Champernowne, Knight, deceased, brother of Sir Richard, for a yearly rent of 46li : 8s : 10d, and twenty three quarters, two bushels of wheat and sixty two quarters of malt at Michaelmas or their money equivalent at the current rate of the Windsor market, and 6li : 9s : 6d which is a recent increase of rent, and ten pounds for perquisites of courts and other casualties. The rents specified in previous grants of the premises are recited, viz. by grant of 77. Henry. VI. 13li : 6s : 8d, 14. Edward IV. 26li : 13s : 4d, 18. Edward IV. 53li : 6s : 8d, 14. Henry VII 53li : 6s : 8d, 8. Henry VIII 66li : 13s : 4d, 18. Henry VIII 69li : 13s : 4d of which thirty seven shillings were stated to be a recent increase. Signature of lessee.
