Indenture of lease by brother William Valeran, prior of the hermitage of Stratfeld Say and proctor general of the abbey and convent of the Blessed Mary of Walemont [St Mary Vallemont], and Henry Elys, his tenant in bondage, to Gilbert Galapyn of a piece of arable land situated in Stratfield Saye next the land of John de Shaldeford on one side and the land of the said Henry on the other, and the common which leads from Stratfeld Say towards Radinges [Reading], to be marled, for a moiety of whatever corn or grass comes therefrom. To hold the said moiety, so that the said piece of land shall be marled within four years. And if any is not marled within four years then the said Gilbert takes to himself the part not marled for his portion to be sown. And the land is to be sown for twenty crops at the right seasons after the said four years and to lie fallow for ten years. Further the said Gilbert is to plough, hoe, weed and reap a moiety of the whole of the said land, and to find a moiety of the seed. And he shall receive a moiety of the sheaves together with a moiety of the whole pasture there accruing for the whole term. The said Henry may not demise his part of the land for sowing to any but the said Henry.
