Bledlow, Buckinghamshire: Letter concerning trees
Item
16 December 1827
2 folios
J J Harper, Bledlow Ridge, to Rev George Bethel. "of four persons before whose house the trees were standing, three of them perfectly acquiesce in taking them down, but one... has lately married the Parish Clark's daughter, the instigator of all this nonsense. This said Stephen Butler has thought proper to remove one of the trees which stood before his door & taken it into his own possession. I should think it advisable to take a warrant against him and also against those two persons who were sent to fill in the post holes... this would effectually silence all opposition." I am sorry to hear of the letter of the Vestry and that "the clergyman has so sillily lent his name, but he is totally governed by his clerk, and a man who is weak enough to allow a dissenting minister to officiate in his church is a dwarf in understanding as well as in person." Asks for a letter to show the magistrates as his authority.
