Born 16 June 1814, the son of Robert Keate the surgeon, and nephew of Dr John Keate, Head Master, he came to Eton in 1826. In 1832 he went to Christ Church and in 1844 was admitted at Lincoln's Inn. He entered the Colonial Service in 1849, and became Civil Commissioner of the Seychelles in 1850 and subsequently Governor of successively Grenada, Trinidad and Natal. In January 1873 he was appointed Governor of the Gold Coast, where he died, 17 March 1873.
His widow Henrietta was given an apartment at Hampton Court Palace where she lived from at least 1876 until her death in 1917.
They had four children, Charles, Robert, Gyneth and Edith.
