Margaretta Brown: Letter from Dr Brown
Item
15 January 1813
From Margaretta Farm. Very sorry he cannot be part of the Christening party for little Emma. Mr Hoseason 'has the weakness to be very fond of the Revd. Dr, however I pardon him, being in the same predicament myself'. The Hoseason boys are fast lapsing fast into their 'former state of savage disobedience'. Capt Wright assured him when he left that he would come to Eton very soon. He hopes Bradney is not coming to visit at Eton, he 'would annoy Dr Keate with his bombast compliments, and would-be-cavant expressions'... I would rather ten thousand times lead the solitary life which I do something like Robinson Crusoe in his desert Island, than fare sumptuously every day and be in the same house with Bradney'. Thinks the ingenuity of Defoe in writing Robinson Crusoe makes it the 'properest of books to be put into the hands of children' and many grown up persons would benefit from reading it. He has planted many trees with very small plants because they need to establish firm roots over many years. Planting bigger trees is not as good as they blow over very easily. Much repair to the river banks, for which the Tax office have made an allowance for money expended.
