Margaretta Brown: Letter from Dr Brown
Item
3 February 1813
Sending Margaretta a Bank of England bill for £10 to help with purchases of mourning attire. Mrs Hoseason is very keen that Margaretta should accompany her on a tour of the Lakes, he is very happy to assist with such a plan. Seems it is very gay at Eton with large parties, hopes Fanny does not suffer going out so much but admits he would like more society than he has. Mrs Hoseason had come to visit him. He had thought this impossible in the mud but she had ingeniously brought a boy with a leaping pole and a plank with her and he laid it over the ditches and she arrived perfectly clean. Has she heard from the Roses? He has written several times but has not had a reply about the money owed for poor old Lieutenant Rose's pensioner.
As she has observed there has been a wonderful change of the Politics upon the Continent but he does not consider Germany emancipated from the cruel yoke of the French. The worthless Admiral is still in Russia and he has heard that Lady Frances is going to join him.
Mourning paper. Addressed to Miss Brown, at the revd. Dr Keate's, Eton College near Windsor
