The majority of the file contains autograph letters (and some typed letters) which were written while Thesiger was stationed in Abyssinia and sent to his mother between 1907 and 1912. They describe his daily activities, the people he met and his experiences whilst he was there. They also describe the political situation at the time.
Also included are some heraldic papers; letters to his wife Kathleen while he was in Balmoral in 1909 as well as a typed copy of a report from Gerald Campbell about an influenza epidemic in Adis Ababa written in 1918.
