Wilfred P. Thesiger's Danakil diary II: ‘Abyssinia’
Item
1934
1 notebook
Lined notebook marked as ‘Abyssinia 1934’, where Thesiger has added handwritten day by day entries between 1 February 1934 and 11 May 1934. The entries cover his return to finish his journey along the Awash River and through Danakil County.
The lengths of the entries are generally one to two page descriptions. A typical entry includes a brief description of where he went that day, the people he met, and his observations on his surroundings. Throughout the diary he also notes the climate conditions and the number of specifics of birds which he collected. Some additional notes on the left-hand page were added later.
It is in this diary that Thesiger began to include sketches of the places he visited, particularly of monuments and graves, and of topographical maps of specific areas, including one of the lake from which the Awash River comes.
