E. W. (Robert) Hermon, born 10th June, 1878 was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He left Oxford to join the British Army when the Boer War broke out. He joined the King Edward's Horse, Special Reserve in 1911 and promoted to Major of the Oxford and Cambridge Squadron. When war broke out the regiment underwent intensive training, before mobilisation to France in Aprill 1915. He was shot through the chest on the first day of the Battle of Arras, 9th April 1917.
