Content description

Brian Howard’s letters to his mother, or ‘Muzzy’ as she is often referred to, span his life from his childhood, when he was first sent away to preparatory school at Copthorne School, Sussex, to the last years of his life when he was travelling around Europe.

His need for money is a consistent theme of the letters, however they also provide an insight into his life and his lifestyle, including his prominent circle of friends and acquaintances. They also include his opinions on the political situation in Europe, where he travelled consistently during the interwar years and in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Arrangement

The letters have been arranged in chronological order and were originally held loose across two boxes. They were separated out from the remainder of the personal papers and correspondence and have been catalogued as a separate sub-series to reflect this. They have been divided into files by the cataloguing archivist, but the original order has been maintained.
