Administrative / Biographical history
Octavius Moulton-Barrett (1824-1910) was the twelfth and youngest child of Edward and Mary Moulton-Barrett. Born in 1824, he was only four when his mother died. He reconciled with his sister Elizabeth after her marriage to Robert Browning and her break with their father.
Octavius was a skilled artist and studied architecture in the 1840s. He worked in Charles Barry's office, probably in the 1840s, as a draughtsman, but nothing is known of his subsequent career.
After their father’s death in 1857, he travelled to Jamaica with his brothers Charles John (Storm) and Septimus but did not stay long.
He married Charlotte Mackintosh in 1859 (who died in 1861), and had two children, Charles Graham and Francis Altham. In 1865, he married Maria Elizabeth Woodifield (1842-1931). They had seven children: Frances Maria, Arabel Altham, Edward Morris, Elfrida Mary, and Altham Leonard.
Octavius inherited a portion of his father’s estate. He lived in Welshpool, Dulverton, Holt, and at Westover, Calbourne on the Isle of Wight, where he died in November 1910.
Altham Leonard Moulton-Barrett (1874-1958) was then youngest son of Octavius and Maria Moulton-Barrett. He rose the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army and was awarded the OBE. He was appointed Regimental Colonel of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards from 1958-1963. He married Violet Radclyffe (1875-1958). Their son, Ronald Altham Moulton-Barrett (1906-1992) - known as Toby or Tom. He married Nadia Alexandra Jardine Kinnaird née Fortington (1919-2010). Through Nadia, the second bequest of Moulton-Barrett material came to Eton College Library.
