Papers of John William Hawtrey
Series
Assistant master 1842-1869
Rev. Hawtrey was appointed to teach in the Lower School, which at that time included boys as young as 7. He built a house especially for them (now known as Hawtrey's) although many continued to go directly to an ordinary dame or tutor, and in 1861 he built the house now known as Warre House. It had its own fives courts and playing field and the boys were in many ways separate from the main body of the school, so that its removal to Slough as an independent preparatory school left little mark beyond the abolition of First and Second Form. Hawtrey later became Headmaster of St Michael's School, Westgate on Sea, and an order of service for the dedication of the chapel there was found in this volume.
