Content description

This sub-sub-fonds contains the papers that were created by Edward Gordon Craig and Edward A. Craig and remained in the family until they were passed to Eton College. It primarily reflects the working process of Edward A. Craig who conducted a significant amount of research into his father’s personal and professional life for a biography ‘Gordon Craig' (1968) as well as for other publications. A significant amount of material was sold to a variety of institutions, so the collection, while comprehensive is not a complete archive record and a number of series contain facsimiles items, rather than original material.

The material covers Edward Gordon Craig’s life from childhood, through to his death in 1966, and while it contains some personal papers, particularly correspondence and photographs, the majority of the files reflect various aspects of his professional life. It includes his works as a writer and theatre theorist, his involvement with various aspects of the theatre and his artistic output.

The sub-sub-fonds also contains material collected by E.A. Craig relating to his father, including studies about Gordon Craig, material relating to exhibitions of his work and other biographical material and ephemera.

The Edward A. Craig portion of the archive reflects his personal life, in the form of correspondence, photographs, and personal papers, with the majority of the papers concerning his artistic output, with his designs for both theatre and film productions, as well as writings by him.

As this part of the collection is a family archive, the material also covers other family members, including papers relating to the Meo family, Edy Craig, Ellen Terry, as well as others.
