The Scientific Society was founded in October 1902 by W.G.A. Orsmby-Gore, A. Meysey-Thomson and A.C.G. Egerton, with W.D. Eggar as President. It was first suggested it should be called the Robert Boyle Society but this was rejected. It was intended for 26 members, later increased to 50 and incorporated the Mathematical Society and the Natural History Society. It met for the reading of papers and exhibition of specimens
