Modbury, Devon: Petition to the King
Item
1438
Petition to the King by William, Prior of Modbury to be granted, for the repair of the church and buildings of the priory, all that the Crown receives in excess of the old apport, i.e. twenty two pounds, by the hands of John Fortescu, Henry Drewe, John Offord, clerk, and Richard Brounste, clerk, the Kings farmer, to whom the Priory has been leased for seven years for a rent of twenty four pounds; and after the expiry of seven years, to be granted the farm of the Priory for a yearly rent of forty shillings, the old apport. The Priory, of which the Prior is'institutus ed unductus' and not 'dativus' nor 'removablis'; is a cell of the Abbey of St. Pier uppon Dyve and came into the hands of the Crown in the late wars with France and so remains notwithstanding the faithful abedience of the Abbey.
