ECR 25
ECR 25
Chattisham and Hintlesham, Suffolk
Series
The property catalogued as ECR 25 was acquired by Eton College in 1531 by a deed of exchange with the Crown of 5 September, confirmed by a patent of 23 December. In return for the Hospital of St James, the college was granted inter alia the manor of Chattisham, co. Suffolk, with its appurtenances in Chattisham and elsewhere in the said county. These lands had formerly belonged to the Priory of Benedictine nuns of Wix, co. Essex, which was one of the religious houses dissolved by Wolsey in 1525 for the foundation of his colleges. The possessions of the Priory of Wix at first went to the Cardinal's College at Oxford, but on 1 August 1523 the dean of that college, John Higden, granted them inter alia to the College of Ipswich. Shortly afterwards the cardinal was in disgrace and the lands escheated to the King, who used them for the purchase of what became and remains the nominal and official residence of the court, St James’ Palace.
