Content description

These papers relate mainly to descendants of Dr Keate (Head Master 1809 - 1834) through his daughter Emma, who married Richard Durnford, Bishop of Chichester, but include papers relating to Sir Charles Brown, father of Dr Keate's wife Fanny and Court Physician to the Kings of Prussia 1788 - 1806. There is also material from Dr Keate himself and his family, siblings and children. Dr Brown's papers include correspondence with Prussian royalty, there are recollections of Bishop Durnford both as bishop and as Rector of Middleton, Lancashire, and an extensive series of letters from his grandson Richard Durnford to his parents from his preparatory school days through his time as an assistant master at Eton until his death in action in 1915. Other papers relate to his brothers' war experiences, and to an official visit to France made by their sister in the immediate aftermath of the war, with interesting photographs.
