Title

Windsor, Berkshire

Level

Series

Date

16th - 19th century

Content description

ECR 13 is the third of three volumes in which Noel Blakiston in the 1940s catalogued Windsor material of the 13th to 18th centuries found in drawers 11 - 13 of College Library. The other two volumes are ECR 11 and ECR 12. The deeds listed here, mainly counterpart leases, must have been stored elsewhere when the catalogue was made, though it is not possible to say why; it cannot be due to size, as most of these would have fitted into the drawers. As they are of a similar nature to the material found in the earlier catalogues they have been added to them. The detailed descriptions of abuttals provide many names of Windsor tradesmen and others, including singing men at Eton and St George's Chapel.

Arrangement

Arranged in date order and given a running number. Blakiston's numbers were continuous between ECR 11 and ECR 13, so that ECR 13 contains only 701 - 950 and the sequence was simply continued, so the first of this group was numbered 13/951. Leases identified as relating to a single property have been grouped together and appear in the sequence at the point of the earliest. These groups have an overall sequential number and the individual leases have been given sub-numbers. It is likely that some leases listed individually actually refer to the same property and further work would enable more groups to be identified. A number of bundles relating to the Spital were in a separate box and have been placed together at the end.

Associated material

These leases should also be recorded in the lease books. See ECR 11 - ECR 13 for further Windsor leases.
