"Expense of entering a young gentelman at Eatton School"
Series
Formerly Ms.409
The identity of the writer is unknown. He was not an assistant at the school, nor, as far as is known, a 'dominie' and the sample bill relates to Mrs Gregory's house. However, he refers to 'the little necisarys that I put into the youths Closett', implying some link with the running of the house. The Christopher Willoughby to whom the letter is addressed may be the Bristol merchant (d.1773) whose son Christopher (c.1748-1808) was created a baronet in 1794 and whose grandsons were educated at Eton.

Letter to Christopher Willoughby setting out the expense of entry and a sample dame's bill for 6 months, sent by Robert Smith. This appears to be a copy of an actual bill, although no boy is named. The dame is Mrs Gregory.
